GATE EE Study Plan (6 Months and 3 Months)
A practical GATE Electrical Engineering study plan: subject order, a 6-month weekly schedule, a 3-month fast track, revision cycles and mock test routine.
Two schedules for GATE Electrical Engineering: a 6-month plan (about 4–5 hours a day) and a 3-month plan (about 7–8 hours a day). Both use the lessons of this track, Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude and the mock test.
Subject order
Electric circuits are used in almost every EE subject, so they come first. Signals and systems come before control systems; machines come before power systems.
- Electric circuits
- Electromagnetic fields
- Signals and systems
- Control systems
- Electrical machines
- Power systems
- Analog and digital electronics
- Power electronics
- Measurements
6-month plan
| Weeks | Main subject | Side subject |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Electric circuits | Engineering Mathematics: linear algebra, calculus |
| 4 | Electromagnetic fields | Engineering Mathematics: vector calculus |
| 5–6 | Signals and systems | Engineering Mathematics: Laplace, Fourier, complex variables |
| 7–8 | Control systems | General Aptitude: quantitative |
| 9–11 | Electrical machines | Engineering Mathematics: ODEs, probability |
| 12–14 | Power systems | General Aptitude: verbal and reasoning |
| 15–16 | Analog and digital electronics | Revise circuits |
| 17–18 | Power electronics | Revise machines |
| 19–20 | Measurements | Revise power systems and control |
| 21–23 | Revision with the formula sheet | One previous year paper per week |
| 24–26 | Mocks: two per week, with mistake analysis | Weak topics only |
3-month plan
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Electric circuits and fields |
| 3 | Signals and systems |
| 4 | Control systems |
| 5–6 | Electrical machines |
| 7–8 | Power systems |
| 9 | Electronics and power electronics |
| 10 | Measurements, Engineering Mathematics, formula sheet |
| 11–12 | Mocks and weak topics; General Aptitude every day |
Tips for electrical engineering
- Circuits and machines carry heavy weight; get both strong before moving on.
- Use per-unit in every power-system calculation; it removes most transformer-ratio mistakes.
- Phasor diagrams solve many machines and power questions faster than algebra.
- Use official previous year papers from the organising IIT's site; see how to analyse them.
Practice
In the 3-month plan, how many weeks go to machines and power systems together?
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 4Weeks 5–6 for machines and 7–8 for power systems: 4 weeks.
Which subject is best studied before control systems?
Show answer and explanation
Answer: AControl systems uses Laplace transforms, transfer functions and stability ideas from signals and systems.
