GATE ME Study Plan (6 Months and 3 Months)

A practical GATE Mechanical Engineering study plan: subject order, a 6-month weekly schedule, a 3-month fast track, revision cycles and mock test routine.

Two schedules for GATE Mechanical Engineering: a 6-month plan (about 4–5 hours a day) and a 3-month plan (about 7–8 hours a day). Both use the lessons of this track, Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude and the mock test.

Subject order

Mechanics is the base for strength of materials, machines and design; thermodynamics is the base for heat transfer and its applications.

  1. Engineering mechanics and strength of materials
  2. Theory of machines and vibrations
  3. Machine design
  4. Fluid mechanics
  5. Thermodynamics and applications
  6. Heat transfer
  7. Materials and manufacturing
  8. Industrial engineering

Tips for mechanical engineering

  • Thermodynamics needs steam-table practice: learn to read and interpolate tables quickly.
  • Manufacturing is factual and wide: make one-page notes per process and revise them often.
  • Industrial engineering is quick marks: EOQ, forecasting, LP and queueing questions are short.
  • Use official previous year papers from the organising IIT's site; see how to analyse them.

In the 6-month plan, how many weeks are given to revision and mocks together (weeks 21–26)?

Show answer and explanationAnswer: 6

Weeks 21 to 26 inclusive: 6 weeks.

GATE-styleMCQ · one correct answer

Which subject should be studied before heat transfer?

Show answer and explanationAnswer: B

Heat transfer builds on the energy balance and temperature concepts of thermodynamics.
