GATE CE Study Plan (6 Months and 3 Months)

A practical GATE Civil Engineering study plan: subject order, a 6-month weekly schedule, a 3-month fast track, revision cycles and mock test routine.

This page gives two schedules for GATE Civil Engineering: a 6-month plan (about 4–5 hours a day) and a 3-month plan (about 7–8 hours a day). Both use the lessons of this track, the Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude tracks, and the mock test.

Subject order

Mechanics comes first because structures, RCC and steel build on it. Fluid mechanics comes before hydrology and environmental engineering for the same reason.

  1. Engineering mechanics and solid mechanics
  2. Structural analysis
  3. Concrete and steel structures
  4. Geotechnical engineering
  5. Fluid mechanics and hydraulics
  6. Hydrology and irrigation
  7. Environmental engineering
  8. Transportation engineering
  9. Geomatics engineering

6-month plan

WeeksMain subjectSide subject
1–3Solid mechanicsEngineering Mathematics: linear algebra, calculus
4–6Structural analysisEngineering Mathematics: ODEs, probability

24–26Mocks: two per week, with mistake analysisWeak topics only

3-month plan

WeeksFocus
1–2Solid mechanics and structural analysis

11–12Mocks and weak topics; General Aptitude every day

Tips for civil engineering

  • Learn IS code values that are in the syllabus (for example limit state factors and limiting depths), and note which code each comes from.
  • Units are a trap: kN vs N, mm vs m, and days vs seconds in hydrology. Write units in every step.
  • Draw a free body diagram for every mechanics and structures question before writing equations.
  • Find official previous year papers on the organising IIT's website; see how to analyse them.

GATE-styleNAT · numerical answer

At 4.5 hours a day, 6 days a week, how many hours does a 26-week plan give?

Show answer and explanationAnswer: 702

26 × 6 × 4.5 = 702 hours.

GATE-styleMSQ · one or more correct answers

Which subjects should be studied before Concrete and Steel structures? (Select all that apply.)

Show answer and explanationAnswer: A, B

RCC and steel design use bending, shear and analysis of beams and frames, which come from solid mechanics and structural analysis.
